The Fireplace Philosopher

About

Thinking is becoming something we hand off. The Fireplace Philosopher is for people who still love to do it.

Philosophy began as something a person did to their own life: looking hard at what they believed and being willing to find out it was wrong. As more of our thinking can be delegated, that practice, critical thinking, is worth keeping on purpose.

So the channel is built around a place and a pace. One thinker per evening, told slowly with the fire on, with a coffee in your hand or good company beside you. Each episode runs close to two hours, in short sentences, one idea at a time. It leaves the hard parts in, says where scholars disagree, says who reported a famous story, and gives a chapter to where the thinker's own argument fails.

Then the part that is yours: reflect, argue with yourself, and talk it over with whoever is in the room. The workpages give those pauses space to write, and each episode page has a quiz to check what you heard. The quiz and a sampler are free; the full workpages are paid.
